Entertainment and education can be found everywhere. That includes unexpected places and at unexpected times. Yesterday afternoon we had the perfect opportunity to be amazed and talk about building, engineering and construction. It was actually the kids that directed our Fun Afternoon Learning About Building And Physics.
We have never taken the children to a construction site. These days there is not much going on, plus construction sites seem to be far from us. However, we were lucky to see a roof being replaced. What stopped the kids in their tracks was a conveyor belt that was being used to carry the roof tiles from the delivery truck to the roof.
The men working on the roof saw the kids and walked over to our side of the street to answers questions. Talk about a very nice crew! They shared that the conveyer belt was built into their flat bed truck. When they arrived to their working site, they attached operate the belt to turn and lift it with a set of controls. That is how they were able to place it on the top of the roof. To start the belt moving, all they have to do is press the “start” button. “A lot like playing with a remote control car” they explained. Once the belt is in position, the next step is loading it with the materials needed. In this case, roof tiles.
The person on the roof neatly makes piles of the tiles so they can quickly work with them afterwards. The conveyor belt makes it safer to take the tiles to the roof top and saves them a day of work!
The kids where inspired and at home spent the rest of the afternoon building and creating.
We are grateful to the men working hard out there under the sun for taking the time to talk to the munchkins, and explaining their machines! It was very nice of them indeed

What a fun way to learn about construction. Next time I see a crew I will stop to let the kids learn about how they put a building, roof or whatever together. Thanks for sharing!

You should! It was quite interesting for the kids and a great way to talk about science!
