December was a month filled with incredible festivities. We had loads of fun, and no doubt, we kept well feed 🙂 Even though we have already partied quite a bit, we are not done yet as the last of our holiday celebrations is tomorrow. January 6, is Epiphany Day or as we call it “3 wise men day – Día de Reyes”. We will help the children prepare boxes of grass and water containers to leave out tonight for the Camels (a bit like leaving cookies for Santa). Our gifts for tomorrow are wrapped and ready. Nevertheless, with preparations in progress, at this point I was scratching my head for a crowd pleasing recipe to take to my aunt’s home, where we always get together for Día de Reyes. No need for you to scratch yours, here is my Easy Crunchy Arequipe Balls recipe for the Día de Reyes Celebration.
After the amaziníg holiday merriment we just had, how do you top it, or at least make the Día the Reyes celebration just as delicious? It came to me during breakfast while eating cereal. Cue in angels singing in the background please: I am pairing all the delicious wholesomeness we are used to of our Quaker® Life Original and Quaker® Simply Granola with our very traditional Arequipe (dulce de leche, cajeta or caramel spread). This is how the Crunch Arequipe Balls sprung to life.
With so many different occasions where we have come together these last 4 weeks, I can’t believe we haven’t had yet a taste of Arequipe! This is the perfect chance to complete our celebrations and check off ALL off the food items of our heritage arsenal. Yes, we have eaten a lot , and enjoyed it all. Tomorrow it will be all about traditions with an unexpectedly fabulous crunchy twist. This will definitely be something new that can be served for any occasion or celebration. Oh Yes, I am ready to #QuakerUp .
I ran to Walmart to get my ingredients. Once there I realized I could use any of these Quaker® Cereals for my recipe :
- Quaker® Real Medleys®
- Quaker® Oatmeal Squares
- Quaker® Simply Granola
- Quaker® Life
I got them all, including the Arequipe, and ran back home eager to make the Arequipe balls I was envisioning. I have to confess, I was mentally licking my fingers at the thought of the recipe even before working on it.
Here is the recipe
I was patting myself in the back because this delicious recipe is very simple to make. I love that it gives our beloved Arequipe a fabulous complement with the crunchiness of the Quaker® Life cereal.
Next, I repeated the same process replacing the Quaker® Life cereal for the Quaker® Simply Granola. Guess what, we got more amazing results! With a different type of crunchiness, the granola does offer a very different look and flavor dimension to Arequipe.
Both recipes are scrumptious. As a matter of fact, I have to tell you that my trial run disappeared in less than 5 minutes. I know now that everyone will be coming to the tray for more! I better make a very large tray of these for tomorrow! I can totally see this recipe used at every family gathering, plus a great dessert or even snack on a regular basis at my home.
I am ready. I can’t wait for our celebration tomorrow. Boxes for Camel grass and dessert are ready!
Tell me, what will you be doing to mark the day tomorrow? Any traditions you carry out with your family?
