Time to make DIY Asian Paper Hats. We have been busy creating, organizing, and preparing for our Chinese New Year celebration. Now that we have some background on it, and have shared it with the kids, we are on full force mode on decorations. We are working on crafts. We already shared with you our paper fortune cookies DIY. Today it is about gearing to Celebrate Chinese New Year With DIY Paper Hats. We are talking about the conical hats. As always, we bring you quick and easy ideas that you can do with the kiddos.
About the Asian Conical Hat
The conical Chinese hats are originally made of straw and worn by the peasants. The wide slanted brim was made so to protect against the sun and the rain. A fun fact about these hats is that you can submerge it in water and wear it to cool down! This is so clever! You will keep cool until the water evaporates.
On to the DIY Asian Paper Hats
DIY Asian Paper Hats
Materials:
- 12 inch construction paper or stronger rounds. One per person
- stapler
- scissors
- 15 inch ribbon strips.
Directions:
- Cut a straight line from the edge of the circle to the middle of it. Don’t go over the middle point of the diameter of the circle.
- Next, layer one end over the over. You will do this with about a sixth of the entire round.
- Staple the overlap at the bottom.
- Now, get your ribbon ready. We used two strips of ribbon 15 inches long each. Staple them on opposite sides of the hat.
- Staples should not pose a problem at all, but just to be on the cautious side, we put a piece of tape over all the staples to avoid any accidental scratches.
There you have your Asian conical peasant hat! You can also choose to cut out a triangle of the round as a step after our #1. This means that you will have to glue the edges together. We are more about instant gratification, and this is why chose the staple route.
The dimensions considered for these hats were based on 3 – 8-year-old head sizes.
Cool mom TIP: you may want to decorate with gold accents or Chinese writing. Do so before you move to step #2 it will be easier.
More Chinese Cultural Celebration Ideas
We chose red paper to make the hats since it is the color of good luck in most Asian cultures. Now, I have to hurry and stuff our lucky red envelopes with their lucky pennies!
