Here is the official boilerplate of the movie for you:
Inspired by the 1987 true story, “McFarland, USA” follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. Coach White and the McFarland students have a lot to learn about each other but when White starts to realize the boys’ exceptional running ability, things begin to change. Soon something beyond their physical gifts becomes apparent—the power of family relationships, their unwavering commitment to one another and their incredible work ethic. With grit and determination, the unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well. Along the way, Coach White realizes that his family finally found a place to call home and both he and his team achieve their own kind of American dream.
Disney’s “McFarland, USA” stars Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Morgan Saylor, Martha Higareda, Michael Aguero, Sergio Avelar, Hector Duran, Rafael Martinez, Johnny Ortiz, Carlos Pratts, Ramiro Rodriguez, Danny Mora, Valente Rodriguez, Vanessa Martinez and Chris Ellis and is directed by Niki Caro with screenplay by Christopher Cleveland & Bettina Gilois and Grant Thompson, and story by Cleveland & Gilois. Quite frankly I did not look much into the movie. On the surface, I thought it was about a topic I did not want to watch because in my experience, usually those are depressing, sad and black movies. Nevertheless, being such a Disney Fan I decided to give it a chance. I went to watch the movie still clueless. On my way out, I have to say I was inspired and happy. I liked the movie very much, and loved the different messages I can hit home with the kids. It is a movie with a lot of spirit. It talks loud and clear about the strength of family unity and how hard work pays off. It also brings to the forefront, optimism, friendship, loyalty, having heart and strength. Simply Powerful.
The way that the story is told feels real and I loved how the audience was so wrapped and involved in the film. We were all cheering and taking to heart what we were watching on the screen. It was an experience to sit with strangers going through the same motions and appreciating the twists and turns of the plot. That told me that the movie resonates and strikes more than a couple of chords. It talk volumes to us all with the many different topics it touches upon.
We love learning and integrating cultures into our lives. As Cool Moms Cool Tips readers you just experienced that with all the preparations we had to celebrate and teach about Chinese New Year at home. Perhaps just a detail, but I was all smiles when I saw in the movie a Quinceañera celebration for an American Girl. A Quinceañera is the is the equivalent of the Sweet 16 but we Latins mark girls 15th birthday instead of the 16th birthday.
McFarland also opened a new door for us in terms of sport because we were not familiar with cross-country running. My Little man has spoken to his school coach and both are now working on switching from the 100 and 500 meters run training to cross-country. We are all learning about the details of the sport and looking for our own mountains since there are not many in Miami either!
Besides the teachings, and the interest it has sparked in my son, not only a Disney Fan I am also a Juanes fan, so needless to say I am all over the theme song for the movie. In case you didn’t know what he looks like, it is him in the black 🙂
Yes, the movie has gone beyond just being a PG movie in our household. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have.
