Grow some Truffula Trees

After we were done with our craft on The Lorax himself, we wanted to Grow some Truffula Trees with a fun activity for the kids!  These trees are featured in the Story by Dr. Seuss called The Lorax.  It is the raw material needed to make something called Thneed of which everything else seems to be made out of!  Because Thneed requires to cut down the Truffula Trees, the Lorax speaks on behalf of the trees, and warns of the consequences of cutting down the Truffula Trees.  Unfortunately, his words are ignored, and as the Thneed industry grows and thrives, the Lorax continues to point out the changes and results occurring in the Truffula Tree habitat until the very last tree is cut down.  Oh no!  But not to worry as hope has a positive outlook as the last Truffula seed is given to a boy to plant and care for.

This is a very easy project that promises a good two hours of fun for all.  We looked into our craft basket and found the perfect materials for some Truffula fun.  With our sample in toe, we let our imaginations go!

Here is what we used as Materials:

  • Ribbon of different kinds and lengths.  We used both cloth and paper ribbons.
  • Glue
  • Paint or watercolors
  • a sheer of paper

Procedure:

On our sheet of paper we glued several ribbon strips next to each other vertically

Then we got our paint ready for little fingers and had the kids make the tops of the Truffula trees fingerpainting art style 🙂

We hung dry and then had our very own outdoor gallery to match our Lorax DIY craft.

I think this activity is a great reason to get your creativity juices going with the kids, and get outdoors to admire our work!

Are you making any Truffula Trees?

Such a fun craft. I can see using washi tape instead of ribbon.

Yes Heather, you are right, washi tape works just as good. Great alternate suggestion, thanks!

Super cute. We just bought some glue, so I think it’s calling us to make some crafts. My kids really enjoyed the Lorax movie. I’ll see if we can make some trees together.

This is such a great idea for a project. I just recently helped my son with his science project and it was a lot of work.

This is such cute idea. One year when my music students did Seussical we made truffula trees out of bulletin board paper and tissue paper.
