You already know we have a permanent imaginary banner cheering on education. Reading is one of our activities this summer. You also know that we have been reading some this summer in preparation for the new school year. Our library has expanded some, and we anticipate many more books to be added to out current collection. I couldn’t find a place to neatly put the books with out having them all fall over. As part of our DIY summer fun, we worked a couple of ideas to fit everyone’s preference for their personal library shelf: Easy Fun Book Ends DIY because thanks to the Kellogg’s Family Rewards Program we are expanding our personal library!
Once I started this project, I realized the sky is the limit. So, I encourage you to get inspired and tailor this idea to your decor and preference!
A Bohemian Victorian Book End
Somehow the result reminded me of the souk or bazaar in Morocco, but the lace I used made me think of Queen Victoria, hence the Bohemian-Victorian combination.
You will need:
- Two bricks (rinse them with water and let them dry before you begin)
- A piece of lace for each brick. Make sure each piece is long enough to go all around it. I used 2 different pieces just for illustration.
- A light color spray paint (I used metallic silver)
- A dark color spray paint (I used hammered dark gray)
- Play-dough
In 3 easy steps you are done. Tip: Just make sure paint dries before moving to the next step:
Your result should be something like this;
Honey Bear Book Ends
I couldn’t stop making a set of book ends for everyone because they are just so easy to do! I got two Honey Bear bottles emptied the honey and filled them with sand. Then I spray painted them with metallic silver paint. Let out to dry and they placed on the shelf along with other silver and pewter items. Just Perfect, don’t you agree?
Now that we have our shelves ready and our books in place we can enjoy placidly our afternoon Raisin Bran, Pop Tarts and Rice Crispies snacks as we read our book. I had ran out of all of them, so I went to Walmart to re-stock. It caught my eye that both boxes were labeled with “Free Book”. Intrigued, I went online and created our Kellogg’s Family Rewards account. Great news: 1 Kellogg’s product = 1 free, full-length Scholastic book, and each person can redeem up to 30 books! Once I had our account, I uploaded my receipt via text. You can also do scanning to your computer or to the Kellogg’s Family Reward app – only when you purchase ONLINE between 7/21 – 9/11. With my code entered, I went to browse the list of books to see what would be our next summer read. “There Was An Old Lady” is what we will be getting. We also donated an additional tittle to our school. Talk about feeling good about books! It was so easy to redeem and build our personal and school libraries!
If you buy directly on Walmart.com, you can receive a free book from purchases made between 7/21/15 and 9/11/15. Look for Buy Now button at http://wm6.walmart.com/Kelloggs-Back-to-School.aspx for a list of all eligible items. Ecommerce redemptions are made via receipt scanning. Full details on site above. Don’t forget that no matter when you buy product, you have 14 days to redeem once you upload the code, but you have until 3/31/2016 to do so.

That was a cute and very functional DIY project. I wish I was as crafty as you. Sometimes I end up with ugly DIY projects. haha. Maybe my son can do this. He has a talent for making stuff.
