Watching my kids play this summer has truly brought back some memories. My childhood was very different than my children’s in many different ways, not only the fact that I grew up in South America but also because of the products we played with like Walkie-Talkies phones), view-masters and roller skates with four wheels just to name a few.
One thing we do have in common? The shows we put on.
Last weekend, the munchkins were very quiet in the playroom, and suddenly announced “the show” was about to start. Oh my, that truly took me back in time! My friends and I did a lot during our summer vacations, and putting on shows was a big part of it. We would rehearse for weeks! What I enjoyed the most was putting the “script” together and working on the “set design”. It was a big production and we felt Hollywood had nothing on us. Oh, how I treasure my Summer Theater Memories 🙂
We worked so hard on our show that we handed out flyers to friends and family to make sure we would have enough spectators. My best friend’s dad was a pilot, and he would bring candies for us from his trips to the USA. In summer, we would save these candies because once we had a captive audience seated and ready to watch our play, we would sell them the imported candy!
But the candies we would never give up were Tootsie Pops. Those were a true treat for us. There was nothing similar where we lived, and we loved them so much we would forgo our earnings for the night and just put on a great performance for the love of theater!
Today none of us work in show business, but those summer memories where we dabbled in theater and stretched our imaginations sure warm my heart and give me a big smile every time I think about them!
Has anything your kids done lately taken you back to some great moments of your own childhood?

LOVE the old pics – great memories for you, I’m sure! We always loved building “houses” throughout the living room for our Barbie dolls growing up. We made staircases out of VHS tapes and walls for the rooms out of coffee table books…you get the idea. I hope my kids one day take over our living room with such creations 🙂
Summers are so different today than compared to back in my days. I’d always be at my friend’s house, while my girl’s friends are always out doing activities or away from home. Not very exciting.
My parents are still in the town I grew up in, so whenever I am at their house I think back to my childhood.
When the neighborhood kids play together they do this. It’s so fun to watch.
What a sweet story. Sounds like great memories. Yes my kids do things or play with things that bring me back to my childhood and I get teary eyed.
I love fun posts like this about fond childhood memories. I remember my daughter and her friends putting on many plays and shows for us when they were little.
I loved my childhood. Absolutely loved it. My children were born in the 80s so much of their childhood was electronics free and playing outside for hours. Nothing was better than that.
Summer memories are so nice, especially when they are filled with friends. I used to love Tootsie Pops as a kid – still do. We always had competitions to see who could find the Indian with the star first from the wrappers.
These are lovely photos. I definitely miss my childhood. We used to play outside during the summer. I remember waking up early, so we could enjoy the outdoor games that my sibling and I love.
the neighborhood kids always put on plays in the summer.
The kids do things sometimes that take me back. Of course now that you’ve asked the question, I can’t think of one off the top of my head, lol. I do know those moments happen though, and I do appreciate them. 🙂
I love and cherish my childhood. My mom passed away when I was 16, so thinking back at all the good times we had is what brings me so much joy. I truly was such a happy kid!
My daughter plays with the neighbors kids all the time and that reminds me of when I visited my grand parents place and playing with those neighbor kids.
My sons always do things that remind me of my childhood. Recently they were eating candy from Pez dispensers that brought me back.
Just loved reading this post. It reminds my childhood memories. I like those beautiful pictures and the story you have shared here. Thanks for bringing back those amazing memories.
I love this post! Thanks for sharing a bit of your childhood with us!
We live in the same area that I grew up in. It’s really nostalgic to see my kids playing in the same playground and hanging out at the same parks that I did.
