All summer long we picked a secret special person and surprised them with notes, little trinkets and artwork. The kids enjoyed it very much. I loved how excited they were preparing surprises for their secret person and how they totally lit up when the secret person loved their surprise. Half the time they were trying to discover who was giving them all the surprises. It was fun and a great on going activity for summer. Now that we are back to school, the kids wanted to continue with the surprises, but I think it can be a bit much with all the homework and extracurricular activities. So, we have decided that on Wednesdays, we will all pick a person and send them a Secret Banana Message in their lunchbox.
The Secret Banana Messages are very easy and quick to do.
You will need:
- a banana
- a toothpick
Procedure:
- Get your banana and lay it on a flat surface
- With the toothpick write on the banana your message as you would using a pen or pencil
Tip: while I have found that the carvings on the banana are more intense on riper bananas, try to stay away from those with too many dark spots so your message stands out
Your toothpick markings with get darker and darker as time passes. Just give it a few minutes to start seeing the message become more intense
By the time lunchtime comes the Secret Banana Message will be very prominent and easy to read.
This is a fun surprising alternative to the notes I used to put in the lunchboxes for the kids. It also allows for a DIY activity with the kids and a great way for siblings to have fund with each other even if they have different lunch times!
I think Secret Banana Messages could be used for many different occasions like birthdays, Valentine’s Day or a “Just Because” moment. I think I will make one filled with hearts for hubby’s lunch.
What will your Secret Banana Messages say? When will you use it for?

This is such a cute idea for when packing a kid’s lunchbox. I think my boys would love this if I put secret messages on their fruit.
What a great idea! I’ve never seen that done before, but already have some message ideas in mind!
I love it! Have fun with it. It makes for great surprises 🙂
That is so cute. I would have never thought to do that. We homeschool but my youngest would still enjoy that for a treat.
Neat way to send message. So cute.
Such a cute way to leave a message! I used to send the girls with a note in there lunch as well. I couldn’t wait some days and told them they could open up there notes on the bus to school, the smiles that they had when they came home was unforgettable.
This is such a smart way to leave a message. I always use post-its. I’m excited to try it with my little man.
