My countdown for Captain America: Civil War started when I got the awesome invite for the #CaptainAmericaEvent in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago. Today, we are D-4 days to go and my countdown just got seriously official! To mark four more sleeps before this awesome movie hits theaters everywhere, Paul Bettany graces us with our exclusive interview. Ready to find out Which Daddy Does Paul Bettany’s Daughter Want most?

Exclusive Paul Bettany Interview
It was a beautiful Los Angeles day when Paul Bettany walked into our interview singing. We clapped excitedly, but he turned back so we could try it again. Happily, the second time he felt our love and admiration because he came in and sat with us :-). He was a ray of sunshine that had us laughing the entire interview. As we jumped into it, the first thing we wanted to know was about his suit because the Russo brothers who direct the film had just told us how bad they felt for Paul Bettany in his Vision suit under the amazingly hot Atlanta weather. Mr. Bettany did say that coming out of his air-conditioned trailer in full Vision outfit looking like a superhero did not last very long. Fun fact though is that his suit has a special feature that pumps ice water through it. “If you can close your eyes and imagine you are inside a gin and tonic…it feels exactly like that.” is his description of using his suit :-).

At first, it took two hours to get him ready every time, but then it was brought down to an hour. Still a long time to me. Talk about being patient! Paul Bettany gave us details on his make-up: “There’s some sort of circuitry, I don’t know how to describe it. Basically, the makeup starts from under my eyes and goes all the way and a bald cap that glues here. What the CG does is continue the lines and circuitry into my eyes.”
As for his eyes, he adds: “There were no contacts. They stopped short of that. They think, we’re punishing him enough to put contacts on him. Poor bastard’s in spanks and a muscle suit.”

I know you know, but as a refresher, Tony Stark’s brilliant AI companion J.A.R.V.I.S came to life as Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron thanks to a little Ultron. We just had to ask him how he felt that now the voice in Tony Stark’s head is a woman, this is what he had to say: “That’s a loaded question! I don’t feel betrayed that its a woman at all. I feel melancholic at times. He added on going from a voice in the movie to a character we see in it: “Well, I just love it. I mean, it’s a double-edged sword, of course, because I used to show up for 45 minutes, talk a bit and they’d give me a big bag of cash. Now I gotta got to Atlanta and wear spanks. It’s been so much fun. I loved doing it and I look forward to it when the date is set for the next one. You meet a bunch of people that you know and it’s like coming back to a family. It’s lovely.”

Personally, I love watching Vision unfold in the flesh on the screen as opposed to a voice. About his character, Paul Bettany tells us that Vision, is on a personal quest. We watched him come to life in the last movie and now he is learning about the world, humanity, and his own mega powers. In his words: “He (Vision) is naïve and yet omnipotent and struggling with learning about the world. I think in this movie you find him trying to be more human. (We see him wearing) human clothes, albeit from the 1950s, but human clothes. He’s interested in working out how loyalty works. I think that loyalty probably works through love… logic doesn’t really afford for loyalty because if new information comes to light, he might well flip and be on Captain America’s side, right? Love is the water that makes soil hold roots, right? So I in order to protect humanity, he needs to understand what love is.”

My favorite answer from the interview was what he shared about how his kids feel about having a superhero in the family: ” “They love it, actually. My daughter met me as the Vision for the first time and I think she was just three. She just ran up to me and gave me a hug. She knew entirely who it was. I had been very worried what her response would be. And then at the end of the day when I took it all off she had her first ever meltdown. She said, I want purple daddy! Which, as I am sure you all can imagine, (is) a little depressing.”. I can totally relate, this is real parenting in action, or superhero action, but how adorable is that?

Paul Bettany is also a director, and we wanted to know if it is a harder job, to which he replied: “I think more actors should do it. It really gives you much more respect for the directors that you work with. I really enjoyed my own period of being an actor and just enjoying my responsibility because you’re obviously taking care of a much larger picture as the director. Your day is just filled with a thousand questions – 99% of which are what color do you want the red shoes to be? Then, 1% of them being absolutely one of the triple questions that are going to make you old. It’s been amazing and I will do it again. I’ll do a comedy next time!”

We were asking if since he is the iconic J.A.R.V.I.S. voice anyone ever asked him to record their outgoing voicemail. His answer: “Is this a request?!” to which we could never say YES! because Chris Evans surprised us as he walked in the room. Both Paul Bettany and Chris Evans started joking with each other and making us laugh even harder. You can read all about that here.

What a great interview. I loved every minute of it. You have to go watch Paul Bettany as Vision in Captain America: Civil War!
About Captain America: Civil War
For this action-adventure movie a stellar cast joins in: starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, Martin Freeman, with William Hurt and Daniel Brühl to tell this story:
Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in twocamps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Opens May 6th.
Meeting Paul Bettany keeps me firm as part of #TeamIronMan. Which is your team?
