3 Things To Know About Skurge in Thor of Ragnarok
As we sat at the beautiful Mandarin Oriental hotel overlooking Miami Karl Urban thanked us for meeting with him. From the start you can’t help but feel the excitement he is ready to share about his Marvel adventure in Thor of Ragnarok. We spoke about his kids were not disappointed that he was not playing a Marvel superhero part. They were just excited daddy was in the movie. Urban shares his kids came on set a couple of times to make sure he was doing his job 🙂 After it was all said and done, these 3 Things To Know About Skurge in Thor of Ragnarok stood out for me:
Preparing to be Skurge:
Dez and Troy are heavier than we might think and he did go a bit to the gym, but to prepare for his character it was more of talking with the director to give Skurge a kind of blue-collar feel. A different twist from all the Asgard citizens who are pretty aristocratic.
Cool fun fact: Dez Bryant and Troy Aikman played in the Dallas Cowboy football team. Skurge got his gun somewhere in Earth called Texas.
He had to shave his head everyday and needed an hour and a half to get make up ready. The wardrobe was the most challenging aspect of the character. He even need to learn how to walk. It was very restrictive. The most difficult thing he has ever had to do what the last shooting sequence filmed in the middle of summer in Atlanta.
The Takeaway:
Karl Urban identified with the idea of realizing your true potential, and becoming who you are meant to be. He hopes that is what kids will takeaway from Thor Ragnarok. He goes on to point out that you can see that idea with Thor, Valkyrie, Hela (even on the flip side of the coin), and of course Skurge.
As a final note on his character, Urban shares that Skurge has a compelling emotional journey. Forced out of survival to align himself with the devil, ultimately deciding to do the right thing brings it full circle for Skurge.
