Is The Captain Marvel Movie Kid Friendly? (Kids under 13)
We now have Black Widow, The Wasp, and Captain Marvel! Some awesome role models for kids. Because Captain Marvel is in theaters everywhere on March 8th (International Women Day) I want to celebrate Nebula and Mantis and Victoria Alonso too. Thank you Marvel! I love it!
Captain Marvel connects a few dots, helps us come full circle with a couple of things. It also takes us on a great back story that ties so much in. If I can envision Thanos’ ego faltering a bit after screening Captain Marvel, you might debate about taking your younger Marvel fans to watch this awesome new movie? After the heart-wrenching moments we went through with Infinity War and the fun of AntMan And The Wasp, the roller coaster is on. And, kids will be asking to go watch the movie. Parents need to know, what the PG-13 rating has in store for kids under 13. Consider these points for kids under 13 without giving any spoilers:
Action – Violence
There is plenty of action. Our girl Carol Danvers is powerful and does not shy away from what she needs to take on. There are fights and superhero moves. I did hear a kid telling her mom she didn’t want a cat anymore. Goose does make a statement……
Language and Gestures
Ahem, Nick Fury, need I say more? Yes, there are words, but not an overload of them, and not necessarily due to Fury. There is no nudity unless you count a naked mannequin and no kissing. There is lots of bonding.
The most intense moments are action-packed. Kids were are the edge of their seats rooting for Vers. There is minimal pulling at your heartstrings. I found those to be uplifting and positive. That statement will make sense when you watch the film.
The Strange Things
You know what I am talking about if you read my “Is Infinity War Kid Friendly” review. There is no mention of disappearances and I feel there is more explanation on the origins of Captain Marvel than there are in any other Marvel backstory. Shapeshifters might be something you will have to spend some time on with your littles. My youngest did question my excitement when I declared “Coulson Lives People!!!”. It is a movie in the ’90s 🙂
Cool mom tip: little ones could be a bit scared of the Scrolls’ look.
Alongside being wowed by Stark innovation or the new heights Black Panther took us on Captain Marvel talks about girls in STEM doing big things. It is a natural part of this story. Additionally, it is very fun to see retro items like pagers and phone booths. Better yet to see them get updated in a natural easy way.
Length of the Movie
This fangirl has no complaint about two hours of Marvel coolness on screen. I think little ones will be just as captivated. Be prepared because you will not want to have a potty break.
Cool Moms That are #TeamIronMan: will definitively see a connection in awesomeness. If anything only in the stake off style, swoon!
Watching Captain Marvel With Kids Under 13
If your Marvel family usually overlooks the movie ratings and take your kids to the movies, this time you can do it with fewer reservations that you did to go see Infinity War. Captain Marvel, makes me think more along the lines of AntMan and The Wasp, while less family focus than this.
If with my Captain Marvel Parental Guide you are still not sure, have a date night. Then decide and go with your entire family. This is another Marvel movie you will want to watch more than once.
Cool mom fun: besides all the girl power, Marvel coolness and a great storyline, get ready for more than one way of throwback. Just like Guardians of the Galaxy, we get all the good music mixed in!
