Exclusive Pixar Toy Story 4 Interview with Bonnie’s Dad-Jay Hernandez
There is so much that we need to tell you about Toy Story 4! But that has to wait a couple of days for the embargo to be over. So, I want to share with you what a member of the animated film’s cast did share about the movie. Overlooking the ocean at a high rise in Miami, we sat down with Jay Hernandez to talk all things Toy Story 4. He was all smiles and welcomed us with open arms into our meeting room. Of course, he thought it was very cool when he found out we try to keep it cool at Cool Moms Cool Tips, he had a kick out of that. Swoon! Here is how the Disney-Pixar Exclusive Toy Story 4 Interview with Bonnie’s Dad-Jay Hernandez went:
Jay Hernandez On Pixar, Toy Story 4 and RVs – Exclusive Interview
Working With Pixar
He wanted to work with Pixar for a while and couldn’t be happier for it to have come to be. “The process of voicing a character is very different because there is no interaction with fellow cast members. So, you have to use a little bit of your imagination and they give your visuals and videos to help you. You have to put yourself out there and give yourself the freedom to play around. If you are not having fun, and the director is not having fun, then it is not working. Something like this (animation), is very playful and fun to do. So, if I am not having fun and the director is not having fun you are not doing your job. Just go in with an open mind.” Bottom line, it has been an amazing experience and he would love to do more animation.
Finding His Voice
When he first got to Pixar there was a bit of a process to discover Bonnie’s dad’s voice. It wasn’t just getting into the booth and doing the voice. “It is not just talking it, is a bit bigger. You explore, play around and they (Pixar) know what they are looking for. once they hear it, you go, and they start trying new things and have an evolution for the next scene”.
From Live-Action movies to Disney-Pixar Animation
Jay Hernandez played a father for the first time in Bad Moms. After their second run of the movie he thought he could totally play the character of a dad for Toy Story 4. He loves that he has had a chance to challenge himself and do different things. His roles in Magnum PI and Suicide Squad were very different processes and doing animation felt like an unexpected thing he needed to do. Like us, he has been such a fan of Pixar and the Toy Story franchise. “As a matter of fact, working with Pixar is something that has been on my mind for a while and now that it has fallen into my lap, I am very grateful for the chance. It has been very exciting”.
Becoming Bonnie’s Dad
I’m sure you are wondering what similarities Jay Hernandez has with Bonnie’s dad? Unlike Bonnie’s dad he is very impatient. But he connected completely with his upbringing, his family used to travel in an RV to Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park. Hernandez has tons of family memories traveling together, it was all 6 of them in a very small space sharing time together. He tried to emulate his parents and imagine the frustrations they must have experienced with the ups and downs of their vacation time to bring that forth in the movie.
Being Bonnie’s Dad
His favorite thing about being Bonnie’s dad was being in the movie itself! A fun fact was that he watched the movie for the first time, with us and didn’t realize it was him playing the role the first time he came on screen. He shared how crazy exciting and surreal it was because he is such a fan of the franchise. When the first Toy Story movie came out, he was in high school in a totally different world and couldn’t fathom being a part of the Toy Story franchise.
