Girls Getaway: Two Day Guide To Catalina Island
Living in Miami, the west coast offers a different vibe to sunshine. I was not ready for the beauty and sensational cool of Catalina Island. It is packed with opportunities for both adventure and deep relaxation. You are going to be captivated by a quaint city by the sea. At first glance it looks like you are about to disembark on a fabulous vacay somewhere in the Italian mediterranean! Look closer and you will discover a unique place with its own identity and culture. This Girls Getaway: Two Day Guide To Catalina Island focusses more on the chill girl trip fun.
Getting To Catalina Island
Where to stay
There are many choices to pick from in Avalon. We stayed at The Aurora Hotel. The rooms are spacious and offer ammenities such as bath robes, toiletries, mini frige, coffee and coffee maker, safe and microwave. Wi-Fi is complementary as is access to the rooftop solar which offers great views to the port. Our balcony room was perfect for beautiful sunrises and night caps.
Day 1 – Indulge and Get Pampered!
Getting your Chill on in Catalina: destress and get pampered as soon as you a settle in
Less than a block away from the Aurora Hotel, relaxing and melting away stress is underlined effortlessly at the Island Spa. From the moment you walk in a beautiful water fountain offers chill water sounds that will transport your to an Italian villa like setting. Once you change into your robe and provided flip flops you can hang out by the pool, lounge in upper deck overlooking the city to enjoy fantastic ocean views or sit in one or the many intimate lounges around the property. You can register for a pilates or yoga class while you wait for your massage / facial appointment.
Eating Your Way Around Catalina
All the pampering at the Island Spa is sure to work up an appetite. To start off the foodie portion of your trip, you should consider booking a Catalina Food Tour. It is the best way to let local experts guide you through the best restaurants and menus according to your preferences and food restrictions. The tour is 3 hours long and is the perfect way to spend your afternoon after a relaxing morning at the spa.
When the food tour is done, you will need a little break. Go back and enjoy the sunset from the Aurora’s rooftop solar. When you are done relaxing at the hotel, get ready for some night life. Probably you will still be full from the food tour. If you are not, start by dinner. Then choose one of the many options on main street to enjoy the night. You can choose from kareoke at El Galleon, sitting and sipping at The Marlin bar or dancing under the stars at Harbor Reef Salon and bar. Check the event schedule for the Casino. If there is a dancing night be sure to attend! The Chi-Chi Club is another dancing alternative. Not in the mood for any of the above? How about a night time tour? There are ghost tours as well as paddle boarding and fly fishing tours available too.
Day 2 – Beautiful Views and Buffalo Milk
Time to spend some time at Two Harbors! The Cyclone boat takes your on a 40 minute ride from Avalon to Two Harbors. It is a smaller place to discover, but with breathtaking views you will not want to miss out on.
Visiting Two Harbors
When you disembark, the small port offers restaurants and the only supermarket / gift shop in the island. After we visited, we headed out to find the second harbor. It is a leasurely hike that offers a spectacular view. At a slow pace it took us about an hour to walk and stop for photos. If you are looking for water activities instead, diving, kayaking, snorkling and paddle boarding opportunites are also available.
On your way back, it will probably be time for lunch. Enjoy your meal in a spacious palapa or seating on one of the ocean-front tables. Make sure you try the famous island signature drink “Buffalo Milk”. After lunch you can choose to hike and discover some of the campgrounds, or try another water activity. I had a small photo hike and spent some more relaxing time in the palapa. It was just perfect.
Where to layout
I don’t know about you, but South Florida locals go to the beach early morning or late afternoon. So that makes it perfect timming for me to get off the Cyclone boat back from Two Harbors to enjoy some beach time. You can do so at Crescent Beach (right on main street) and Descando beach (past the Casino).
Still Time for More Catalina Island Memories
After an hour or so, find a place for your last meal on Avalon and then get ready to head back to Los Angeles on the 7pm Catalina Express Ferry.
There you have it. A relaxing and eventful trip that will be fantastic. The beauty of this itinerary is that it will keep you busy without pressure and making plans to return to the island. I for one, want to come back to visit the Bison and enjoy the Drinking Tour.
