I loved Maleficent and was on total countdown for Disney’s new sequel. So, is Maleficent Mistress of Evil Kid-Friendly? I have the answer to that question along with a parental guide and movie review for you. Before we start on details I do want to say that the movie is beautiful. There is much to love and some things that dissapointed me. Yes, the Maleficent Red Carpet Event was wonderful, and the movie totally makes you dream. I share my reservations along with what I loved.
Is Maleficent Mistress of Evil Kid-Friendly?
Let’s start off with answering the question: should I take the kids to see Maleficent Mistress of Evil? I say yes and no. Here is why:
Maleficent Mistress of Evil Parental Guide
ACTION and VIOLENCE
The movie starts off with a scene that can be scary for little ones. Theft and fairy snatching happens. There are backstabbing moments and war takes place. So, death, explosions and, violence happen. There is more than one scene that feels dark and can be scary for the younger ones. Also, adorable creatures are being stolen and held captive. That might something to look out for with the most sensitive kids.
LANGUAGE AND GESTURES
None that I caught. I felt it was a very clean movie in this respect.
I did not see offensive gestures or any sexual content. There are a couple of kisses. Beyond that, the strife is based on family issues or relationships.
There are intense family moments as well as action scenes that can be a bit much for the little ones. Some scenes might need an explanation. Like why some people are not getting along or want to overcome each other.
LENGTH OF THE MOVIE
Admittedly, is a bit long for the younger ones, so watch that drink intake. Â Remember that this is a new story. You might miss out on the dot that connects the line.
Overall, I think kids under 7 will not enjoy the movie. Sure, the fairies are fantastic and the CGI is on point, but there is not enough of that to capture their attention. The whole movie will feel very grown-up and boring to them, not to mention scary. Maleficent Mistress of Evil is not a kid-friendly movie in my opinion for those under seven.
Maleficent Mistress of Evil Movie Review
I love what is done with the scenery and the use of CGI. There are some new loveable characters that you will be cheering for. I am excited for you to see the movie. It is great that the story carries on beyond the tale and beyond what we have already seen in Maleficent. I do admit that I was disappointed the first time I saw the movie. I felt a disconnect and wanted to see more of the fairies. The second time I saw it, I appreciated it way more. ÂDespite still having reservations about the same part, I saw more the value of it. The movie starts off with a hard tone. This time around, we see more evil and human wickedness than we do in Maleficent. Here is my Maleficent Mistress of Evil Movie Review:
Maleficent is not alone
The movie is beautiful and well made. Nevertheless, the story drags on in parts. I appreciated the fact that we see more on Maleficent’s kind, but it feels disconnected from the rest of the movie. The justification is there, but maybe it is just the way it is presented. Or even, how they feel like savages which as much as they have been pushed to be, are intelligent creatures that should be above the way they are portrayed. Also, it is great to see the weak side of a hero, but Maleficent is either hurt and scared or aloof when with her people. I wanted to see Maleficent’s character and power, pretty much what we witnessed in the first movie. By this I mean her inner personality power. Not her supernatural powers.
Princesses and Girl Power
The stars of the movie are all women. Two women lead opposing armies! Yes to that! But, girl power needed a tad more if you ask me. Aurora is grown up and shyly shows her strength. Maleficent is powerful, but she feels more lost throughout the movie than I would like to have seen. Maybe it is all part of the life of a villain and how they are misunderstood? On the other hand, Michelle Pfeifer as the queen totally carries the entire movie in my opinion. ÂShe is strong and determined. I love her in the role and love her war outfit!!
As will all Disney movies, there is plenty in the movie that will help us have important conversations with our family. Inclusion, tolerance, and fighting for our beliefs are all at the heart of the movie. So is finding solutions, conservation, and even world peace.
There is talk of a Phoenix, but I equate Maleficent with a dragon. I might have missed (or wanted to miss) a chapter or explanation. I want to see the dragon and not a bird, albeit a magnificent creature (stomps her feet and throws a mini tantrum, but realizes this is NOT Sleeping Beauty).
Overall Maleficent Mistress of Evil
I do believe you need to watch this movie more than once. Â You will have your heartwarming moments, some humor and lots of action. The scenery and the CGI will captivate you and you will enjoy the new characters. The costumes are also infused with lots of wow.
Maleficent Mistress of Evil is good entertainment and a great family film (kids over 7). I was left wanting more because my expectations were really high but the points I bring forth do not take away from the film being a worthy one to buy tickets for. It is a great movie for the season and will inspire plenty of costumes! In theaters everywhere October 18th.
