Is Black Widow Kid-Friendly? Every Marvel family has been eagerly waiting to watch Marvel’s Black Widow. Now that theater release on July 9th is imminent, what do parents need to know before the children watch? Is Black Widow appropriate for children? To start off, if your kids have watched a Marvel movie, this one keeps the same tonality lines. Yet, there are some points to consider. So, do read our Black Widow Parent Guide below.
Is Black Widow Kid-Friendly?
It will be hard not to be elated before, during and after watching Black Widow. Finally, our favorite female Avenger gets her tittle movie! This movie takes place after Captain America: Civil War. And, after Endgame, well, we couldn’t be more excited t see Natasha be Natasha again. Nevertheless, this movie, as Marvel can, might take dark moments and touch upon a myriad of topics that parents might want to be ready for. The movie is rated PG 13 for intense sequences of violence/action, some language and thematic material. So, we are looking at that a “thematic material”. Here are our key parental guide considerations:
Action- Violence
Whoa, the action sequences are everything you would expect and then some because, well, Natasha Romanoff and her sister! There are explosions, gun shots, knife fights, people getting killed wounded and shot at. A whole island gets destroyed, and there is plenty of verbal and mental violence.
Language
English and Russian profanity are used. You can read the translations 🙂 No F-bombs to report
Intense Moments
Definitively, plenty of scenes that will have you at the edge of your seat. Especially if you are more sensitive. Kids can experience anxiety from apparent family separation, and again when the family tries to reconnect in their special way. Sibling fights might also affect children. Also, facial deformities as shown and that could be hard to watch for some.
Adult Topics.
Ok, besides drinking, there are plenty to cover:
Biology:
There is a conversation that goes mention more than one or the female reproductive system and its destruction. Kids might need explanation as two what those words are. Not to worry, not shared in a sexual context. Just as what they are: uterus or fallopian tubes.
Family
It is a reminder that family is not only bonded by blood. But, this family in particular has deceit and fake written all over its inception.
Betrayal
There are plenty of angles to perceive betrayal from. This might hit hard with the kids.
Psychological manipulation
A quote in the movie is “The world functions at a higher level when it is controlled”. Be it by how Black Widow was trained as a girl with manipulation, or by the new Red Room techniques that physically take over your mind, the aim it to control others.
Revenge
Our main character, Natasha Romanoff is out for revenge.
Emotional rollercoaster
Memories, understanding family history, and personal plights will all lead to emotional rollercoasters. Be on the look out for the more sensitive ones because some concepts might be hard to grasp completely.
Black Widow Overall – Should Kids Under 13 Watch Black Widow?
Despite having watched Marvel films previously, there are some issues that make this movie more heavy. To start, the widows are girls that a have been taken by Dreykov. In a nutshell, it sounds like human trafficking. As you see from the points above, it is darker and encompasses a lot more than we normally get from Marvel. And, you know they always go for more anyway. This time we get it all. Girl power is center stage and not in your face. Nevertheless, the few men in the movie do have more than a little power over the women. Yes, this is overcome, but, so you know….
The family dynamic is just perfection. Specially, considering how they come together as one. Despite the trust issues, traumatic childhood and It is heartfelt, and beautiful to see uniform and evolve on screen. The movie itself is powerful. Hands down, amazing entertainment and the best movie going experience. Fans will get all the Natasha we have wanted. While, we might want more, this movie does not leave anyone desperately craving more.
The humor is lead by Yelena, Natasha’s sister. Delivered nonchalantly and just as any other sibling would. It sure helps push forth the more deep topics and underlines the coolness of the movie.
At two hours and 15 minutes this one is not for the little ones.
In conclusion, Black Widow Kid-Friendly? Well, it is not as family friendly as WandaVision is. I do not recommend Black Widow for kids under 12. But, you know your kids best and 10 and up might be able to handle it. You just prepared with all these points. So, now you can decide if Black Widow is safe for your kids to watch.
