What can you expect from What If? Big big twists for our Marvel characters. And, that is putting it mildly, I think. Get insightful details from our conversation with the series creators and talent
Marvel’s What If…? Interview: What Multiverse Brings
Because, this is the first animated series from Marvel Studios, we needed all the details. Fortunately, we had the wildly incredible opportunity to hear straight from the creators how they explore what could have been. I for one, am very excited for it. My calendar is marked for its debuts on Disney Plus on August 11.
Here is who we spoke to at the Marvel’s What If…? Interview:
- Jeffrey Wright (voice of “The Watcher”)
- Bryan Andrews (Director)
- AC Bradley (Head Writer)
- Brad Winderbaum (Exec. Producer)
What inspired Marvel’s What If…?
Brad Winderbaum tell us that: “It was a stroke of inspiration that happened on the drive home from work one day. And I found myself in my driveway just texting with Kevin Feige, back and forth, about what this show could be.”
He also explained that due to all the sets, locations, characters and different MCU elements to revisit, it was obvious to them from the start that this creation needed to be an animation. At the same time, an animation would allow them to reach the different places and scopes they plan to take us to.
Keep in mind that What If…? takes place after Loki so, “The multiverse has now erupted in every possible direction.”
Marvel’s What If…? Is An Anthology
And in light of that, Brad Winderbaum tells us that What If….? acts a bit like “Twilight Zone” did in that you never know what you are going to get. “You might get an episode that’s comedy, you might get an episode that’s kind of dramatic and serious, super emotional, full of action. (The Multiverse) gave us an opportunity to apply a little taste of a variety. So, one can maybe goes a little bit
darker. One gets, like, a, even funnier, you know what I mean? Having that type of variation is written in the book itself. Just what if? Things are so different, so weird, so crazy. It just opens the floodgates. We can do whatever we wanted to, and that was quite exhilarating”. In the end, he summarizes it as a personal project: ” like, here’s the keys to the Porsche. Have fun, kids! It’s like, whoo. We won’t crash it, we hope.”
Let The Watcher Guide You
Jeffrey Wright plays The Watcher in Marvel’s What If…? If, you are not into the comics, The Watcher is quite famous there since 1963. He tells us that is his character is: ” something like the most dramatic being in all the known universe. So, he’s a fairly dramatic guy. He’s a fairly powerful guy that kind of overseeing the entire MCU (and) the multiverses.”. Wright also shares that The Watcher has kind of a Rod Sterling role, where he is a narrator of sorts. The one thing we can relate to is that The Watcher is maybe the biggest Marvel fan there is.
Crafting What If…?
How do you choose which stories to ask the question to? Well, it is not how the creators of this series went about it. Instead, AC Bradley share that: “We all looked for was what’s the heart behind the hero? How do we get behind the shield? What’s a part of
the story we haven’t told before? For me, these characters are iconic. We recognizetheir silhouettes. We recognize their taglines. But what’s important is how we connect to them”. In other words, the team sought out new ways to connect with our favorite Marvel heroes with The Watcher. By the way, The Watcher is also trying to find that connection.
Talking about characters, Brad shared that “We realized as we started developing the second season that Captain Carter would be the character we revisit every season.”.
Working with Chad Boseman
There is no doubt in my mind that the entire team cherishes their time working with Chad Boseman. At the time no one knew what he was going through.
Brian tell us: “I think he may have been even one of the first, actors that signed on and said, “Oh, yeah, I’m
gonna do that voice.” And we were so excited because we really, really, really wanted to work with Chadwick and we
just loved Black Panther. He came and he brought it and he had a lot of fun. And it was really great to hear him talk about he was excited to play this particular version of T’Challa because it was different. Because it was a version of him being able to play the king, but the king without the mantle of royalty and all the other things that go with it.”
And, because of that completely different spin Boseman lightened up and was a bit more playful. He was excited to have the chance of exploring a new veracious of T”Challa and help the audience see him in a different light.
