King Richard Movie Review
No, it is not a story about Serena and Venus. While we should get one, this is mostly about the plan their father had set in motion. And, more importantly, about family. It will make you cheer. And even though we know the ending, we want to know it all and follow through this plan of his. These are the biggest notes to take from the movie:
The objective is to give the daughters success. No doubt, the method is via hard work. Constantly, the feedback and the father – daughter relationship is one of love. The movie portrays a family man who does shower his kids with love and gives them the self-confidence tools. But, it is not only about the tennis players. While it just touches upon the rest of the siblings, it highlights how the parents nurture the future of all the daughters. Also, it focussed on a tight knit family that is always at each other’s side.
Let them be kids
As ambitious as King Richard’s plan might seem, or even as far fetched, it is relentless. Nevertheless, despite the constant grind to keep the dream alive and real, the first thoughts are the well-being of the daughters. Instead of pushing them to grow up quickly. Or, potentially be faced with difficult situations early on, Richard opts for giving his daughters a childhood.
Racism / Elitism
Both topics in the movie. Also, both topics that are still relevant today. A great opportunity for a conversation about both. Plus, the way to be humble as addressed in the movie.
Game, Set, Match: King Richard Movie Review – Overall
There is no doubt in my mind that King Richard smashes it. The first thing that stands out to me is the incredible acting of the talent. So much so, that the 2.5 hours of the film just breezed by. I was completely pulled in but the story. And, if you are not a tennis fan, you will all the same be vested in the movie. It is funny, hard, intense, poignant and funny all at the same time. You will leave the theater inspired and wanting to go grab a tennis racket. Definitively, you will want to go out and conquer something. Just anything. Most likely, you will stop and reflect on your plan to get it done from a very different perspective.
