The Mitchells vs. The Machines Interview
The thing that stuck out to me most from all the details shared in this interview was that it took 6 years to make this movie!
Easter Eggs
There are plenty of Easter Eggs in this movie that give a nod to all the things the film makers love. Mike Rianda especially said the music is really what sings to their hearts and chose their faves and their favorite versions of the songs for that matter.
The Monchi inspiration
Monchi is a real pug! It is based on Mike Rianda’s sister’s pug, Maggie and it took many drawings to get to. But, Lindsay Olivares nailed his look and she actually did a whole drawing study on Monchi. By the time she presented him to the team they were all over her creation.
Movie Graphics
The mood is all about teenagers’ rooms. The direction that Linday Olivares gave her researchers was to search on Craigs list. To her that is where they were going to get photos of actual rooms. In this way, they would not get lost in the rabbit hole of perfectly decorated rooms. Instead they would get the real deal. I think they nailed it!

AboutThe Mitchells vs. The Machines
From the humans who brought you the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie comes The Mitchells vs. The Machines, an animated action-comedy about an ordinary family who find themselves in the middle of their biggest family challenge yet…saving the world from the robot apocalypse. No big deal, right? It all starts when creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people,” when her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. But just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot uprising! Everything from smart phones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are employed to capture every human on the planet. Now it’s up to the Mitchells, including upbeat mom Linda, quirky little brother Aaron, their squishy pug, Monchi, and two friendly, but simple-minded robots to save humanity.
