Encanto Magic on Repeat: Encanto Interview with Charise Castro. I will never stop playing Encanto’s music or watching the movie. It takes me back, it captivates me, and it inspires me. That, is just to name a few of the many emotions that Encanto brings out. Above all, I can’t deny that living far from my beloved Colombia, I just can’t get enough of it. Colombia comes alive in Encanto! Naturally, I just had to jump at the chance to talk all things Encanto with Co-Director and Co-Screenwriter Charise Castro.
Encanto Magic on Repeat: Encanto Interview with Charise Castro
The Encanto music is a wonderful ear worm that I just love. It is more than Bruno. What hit home the most is “Dos Oruguitas”. I just looooove Sebastian Yatra’s rendition. But, as my Encanto Movie review shares, the story comes with deep thought process behind it. I am not only talking about what the filmmakers discovered to put this movie together. I am talking about a different type of background. Case and point, Charise Castro. See what I mean from the interview excerpts:
Encanto’s Dark Elements
How did Castro marry her horror genre background with Encanto? “I think my favorite kind of storytelling is stories that really sort of engage with the truth of human emotion and human relationship and then have some kind of cool genre element on top of it that really takes the story to another level. So I think the best horror films are about genuine human emotion and fear and relationships. And then they have a scary house on top of it. And this movie, I think, is the same in a lot of ways. As we were writing, I really wanted to make sure that this movie would work, even if there was no magic in it.” It is not all dark, here is my Encanto parent guide in case that helps.
Magical Powers and Gifts
I am totally right there with Charise, I would love to be able to communicate with animals! “For a long time in our development and screening process, Pepa was actually indestructible. And for a long time, Julieta had the weather power. But then, as we started thinking, we talked a lot about our own moms and how it seemed like they had the ability to just cook things that could heal any ailment. Then we just loved this weather power so much that we said so what if it’s wielded by someone who is not calm and collected, but someone who is very mercurial? And that’s how Pepa came about.”
Colombia to the Forefront
Because Colombia is magical realism, invited by documentary film makers, the crew landed in the wonderful place that I call home, fell in love and found a perfect place to develop this story
Easter Eggs
Any Easter Eggs that haven’t been yet uncovered? Perhaps not. But Bruno, let it go reference is one of Castro’s favorites. Mine is one about the Colombian soccer team in Bruno’s room. Did you catch that one?
Writing About A Latam Setting
Mostly this is the reason why Castro came on board. It felt historic and a movie that she would have growing up.
About Encanto
Why should you get excited every time about Encanto?
The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift — every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger.
