“Read to the kids to develop the love for reading early on” I have heard that many many times. I have heeded it to heart. As a matter of fact, reading a story is part of our bedtime routines. Baby refuses to go down without a story and my little man is now practicing to read the first words out loud to all of us. Of course, I am beaming proudly. Right now, we are getting our books ready for a read-a-thon of sorts at home. Yes, lots of reading will be in order. That is because we are almost ready to Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We are including in our celebration efforts to Foster A Love of Reading and Our Planet with Cute Lorax DIY Craft.
A Bit on Dr. Seus
Dr. Theodor Seuss was born in Massachusetts in 1902 of German descent. We know him as a children’s book author. He was a writer who used lots of rhyme, a cartoonist, and an illustrator. Interestingly enough he did not have children. But boy, has he entertained and helped educate children for years now! The Cat in The Hat and How The Grinch Stole Christmas are Dr. Seuss’ books frequently read at home. Of all the Seuss children books my two favorite titles by Dr. Seuss: Oh, The Places You’ll Go and The Lorax.
Cute Lorax DIY Craft: to love reading and love the planet!
I can’t get enough of the cute lovable character The Lorax is, who shares with a boy the importance of caring for Truffula Trees. Despite many economic, environmental and political issues addressed in the book, for the kids, it is a great way to learn about cause and effect/actions and reactions. It is also an opportunity to talk to them about being good to the planet, recycling, caring for animals and plants.
To have fun and push further we personify The Lorax in a DIY in hopes it will help foster that will to care for the planet, a small step a at a time. We made a Lorax that becomes a pot holder for the seeds we are offering. Here are the easy and quick instructions for you:
Because handling the small eyes and multiple strands of yarn can be tricky using a glue gun, the kids only helped with putting the seeds in each pot. If you are willing to wait for glue to dry out, it would be the best alternative to get the kids more into the project with you.
Perfect for Class Parties!
Each of the kids’ classmates are getting their own Lorax with a pack of seeds, with a note encouraging to read, plant their seed and share with us what they get because everyone gets a different type of flower, vegetable or herb pack of seeds in their pot 🙂 Alternatively, you can just plant the seed and offer something ready for water and TLC.
I love that the craft has a double purpose, and is cute to have, don’t you agree?
If you want another easy craft to make Truffula trees, here is our version for that. Do you have a special book you will read with the kids March 2nd?
